What is All Star Dance?
ALL STAR vs. SCHOLASTIC vs. STUDIO
All Star is a unique avenue of dance that embodies some of the best aspects of studio and scholastic dance. Uniformity and performing as a team are paramount in All Star Dance, much like in the school dance setting. Unlike many scholastic dance opportunities. However, unlike many scholastic dance opportunities, All Star dancers train and rehearse in a studio, typically starting at a young age. While school dance teams tend to focus on crowd support and other roles that serve other teams, All Star Dance prioritizes competition and performance, much like many studios do. Teams are generally organized through studios and welcome dancers from across the area.
What sets All Star Dance apart is its strong sense of community, its emphasis on leadership development, and a commitment to fair play through consistent rules and standards upheld by the USASF. Dancers have opportunities to compete at the prestigious Dance Worlds, earn scholarships and grow within a structured yet inspiring environment that welcomes athletes from across the country.

USASF DANCE TIERS
All Star Dance is divided into tiers by age and experience, allowing dancers to participate in a way that suits them best. These divisions help clubs place athletes on teams where they can grow, be inspired and face new challenges throughout the season. USASF member studios and gyms offer dance programs in various divisions, including:
Premier: For dancers with strong dance training and solid technical ability. Premier teams are comprised of individuals who are ready for highly competitive performance levels.
Intermediate: For individuals with limited technical element proficiency who want to strengthen technique and performance skills in a competitive team atmosphere. Intermediate teams typically require less time and cost commitments than are required of All Star Premier teams.
Novice: For individuals who are new to All Star but ready for performance-based teams that are evaluated at events. Novice teams focus on strengthening technique and performance skills that help prepare athletes for competitive All Star teams.
DanceABILITIES: For Exceptional Athletes who aspire to "I can do” attitude in an All Star environment that: is safe and fun; builds independence and self-confidence; and provides a place for positive social interaction and peer support.
FUNdamentals: For individuals who want to discover All Star dance in a fun, non-competitive, technique-centered atmosphere. FUNdamentals prepare young athletes for more competitive and performance-based teams.

USASF DANCE CATEGORIES
Typical dance categories you may see at USASF-sanctioned competitions include contemporary lyrical, hip hop, jazz, kick, pom and variety. Competition routines will incorporate many technical elements and skills specific to the dance styles while emphasizing musicality, uniformity, synchronization, complexity and athleticism. And, depending on the competition, teams also have the opportunity to meet with judges to receive feedback on what they did well and ways to improve.
Gold Star Competitions are those that exceed the USASF Dance Minimum Sanctioning Standards with their Performance Area and Dance Panel Judging standards. Search for a Gold Star Dance event near you.
